Slavic fortified settlement at Mikulčice

The Slavic Fortified Settlement in Mikulčice, near the present-day Slovak border, is the best preserved archeological site documenting the early-medieval, Great Moravian Empire of the 8th and 9th centuries. The settlement was built in the branching Morava River and consists of a large acropolis, outer ward and underground. There are foundation negatives of eight churches and the Princely Castle in the terrain which is open to the public, with information boards along the visitor’s route. The movable heritage found in the locality and the history of the settlement is presented in the exhibitions in the Visitor centres.

The only church still-standing from the Great Moravian period is found in the nearby Slovak village of Kopčany. Interestingly it was to the Great Moravian Empire that the Byzantine missionaries Cyril and Methodius, the brothers  from Thessaloniki, brought Christianity to the Slavic nations

The Mikulčice-Kopčany archeopark has applied for listing as a UNESCO Word Cultural Heritage site.
